"I'm in my own world"
Elliot Jr’s music can only be described as smooth and slick, with a mixture of R&B and rhythmic trap influence.
“Growing up I was always listening to R&B and Hip-Hop music around the house” Elliot quotes. “My mum was always playing music by guys like Usher, Ne-Yo and Justin Timberlake. At my aunties house, I would be hearing a whole bunch of stuff by artists like Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, 50 Cent and Biggie Smalls. I even remember being in primary school winning a dance competition to ‘Yeah’ by Usher and then being in another competition performing ‘One in a Million’ by Ne-Yo, so these guys definitely influenced my music.”
As a kid, Elliot always knew that he was gifted; but his initial introduction to entertainment was through dancing and playing the drums.
“My mum was in the church choir; she has a really beautiful voice! I used to play the drums for the choir, but watching my mum sing made me want to try and sing myself, and then when I actually tried it the response was mad haha”, he states. “I started singing in the choir and when I went to secondary school, I was in the boys’ choir and gospel choir, doing countless different solos.”
He began frequenting ‘High Road’, a studio close to his house in Bristol where he grew up.
“I must have been thirteen or fourteen when I first went to High Road, that’s where I learned a lot of what I know today. Everyone used to queue outside because the sessions were only on Wednesdays and Fridays from six until nine, so you could only get a one-hour slot. I was always one of the first ones there and the last ones to leave, because I desperately had to get my slot. If I couldn’t get a slot, I would be heartbroken.”
“What really helped me master my craft is the engineers who worked there. They could see how hungry I was to learn, so they would let me sit with them and mix my songs. I would spend time watching them mix my songs, and practice mixing them myself. That really helped my development, without those guys’ help I wouldn’t have got to the stage where I now record, mix and master my music myself.”
In 2019, he released his first independent EP “Step By Step”, which accumulated over 15,000 streams across all streaming platforms. In 2020, he formed his own independent record label ‘Diamond Gang Entertainment’.
“Diamond Gang… well the name comes from the fact that I always shine! Haha. The label motto is ‘using music and creativity as a way to shine’, because around my city everyone knows me for my music and my singing, so starting the label was a way for me to solidify that.”
Elliot Jr’s goal is simple but extravagant - to make great music that is recognised globally.
“I want my music to touch everyone in the world, like no matter what kind of lifestyle you live, I want you to be able to listen to my music and feel good, you know? I really believe that I can and will do it, so I’m just focused on being the best version of myself that I can be.”
